Sabesp, founded in 1973, is a mixed-capital public company that pioneered the sanitation sector in Brazil. Today, it is a global benchmark in the supply of drinking water, and sewage collection and treatment, serving 375 municipalities in the State of São Paulo.

Its reach is truly impressive: 28.4 million people supplied with water and 25.2 million people with sewage collection. These numbers reflect not only its magnitude but also the trust placed by the population of São Paulo in its essential services.

Challenges presented by SABESP

SABESP faced significant challenges in its operations, especially in monitoring the Pinheiros River, where the costs involved in deploying monitoring teams were high.

To optimize these processes and reduce costs, SABESP sought the expertise of Deza. With our help, we developed a robust and effective strategy to implement artificial intelligence (AI) technology in drones dedicated to monitoring the river.

How Deza provided a solution 

We developed an advanced artificial intelligence (AI) system for SABESP, using drones to perform comprehensive monitoring of designated areas.  This innovative solution eliminated the need to send field teams to the site, saving the company valuable time and resources.

The system provides detailed reports with precise latitude and longitude data, identifying any significant changes in the landscape along the Pinheiros River. 

Thus, this innovative approach allowed the AI to be trained to identify specific and unusual events, such as landscape changes and areas with significant image alterations. 

The AI we developed follows a variety of workflows, including preliminary leak inspections, press monitoring, monitoring of previously executed services, inspection of pavement restoration, and geo-infrastructural surveys. This multifaceted approach ensures comprehensive coverage and an effective response to diverse situations.

With this advanced capability, the AI can monitor the Pinheiros River more efficiently and economically, allowing specialized teams to act proactively and agilely to resolve any detected problem.

Result

After only 90 days of implementing the artificial intelligence (AI) system by Deza, SABESP achieved remarkable results. The company managed to precisely map the entire Pinheiros River and obtained significant savings of over R$300k. 

This is mainly due to the elimination of the need to send field teams for manual monitoring, now carried out continuously and efficiently through the drone-based AI system. 

These results highlight the positive impact of the project on the management of SABESP's basic sanitation operations.
